The winter is feeling loooong and the ice, snow and cold has arrived (better than all that rain wethinks)! So how does one stay motivated and prepared for winter cycling??
Here are a few of our key pointers to keep you confident and eager to get out on your bike despite the winter conditions!
1. MAINTENANCE IS KEY...
If your bike is in tip-top condition you'll feel more confident to get out on the roads.
Ensure your bike has been serviced to get it prepared to deal with increased exposure to water and gritted roads.
2. LIGHTS, LIGHTS, LIGHTS...
Having a decent set of lights will help to keep you safe and visible to other road users... but will also guide your way! The dark mornings and evenings can be off-putting but if you have lights brighter than the sun (or thereabouts), you'll be off and away without issue!
We have a range of bright, compact and easily maintained lights in our showroom... so there's no need to go for anything substandard.
3. GOOD GRIP...
Make sure you have the right tyres on your bike to deal with the conditions. There are plenty of suitable options that will deal with any surface... bring your bike along and we'll kit you out to keep you pedalling.
In the words of Wainwright... "There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”
This is true with any outdoor activity. If you're kitted out with warm, waterproof and high-visibility clothing, there's no reason to stay indoors.
Clothing essentials for cycling in winter include waterproof & windproof jacket, thermal tights & undervest, overshoes, windproof/thermal gloves, and clear glasses.
If you can store your bike somewhere warm(ish) and dry it'll remain in better condition, and will be way more appealing to hop on!
We understand that the perfect storage solution isn't always available but if you can give your bike an indoor home for winter, your bike will be most thankful (and you'll avoid that squeaky noise that an unhappy bike makes)!
So, there you have it. Don't let winter stop you... keep on biking!
